International cooperation - Safety against flooding

Internationalization

Although no formal relations have been defined, the project is closely interwoven with the European project FLOODsite, as several Delft Cluster team members participate in FLOODsite as well. FLOODsite is the largest ever EC research action on flood risk management, with an EC "grant to the budget" of nearly ten million euro. The project, which started in 2004, is scheduled to take 5 years to complete, and is carried out by a project consortium of 36 European research institutes and universities, involving approximately 150
researchers from 13 countries. Brussels sees FLOODsite as the main vehicle for the development of tools to implement the new EU Flood Directive.

Delft Cluster institutes co-operate with French research institutes in the field of flood risk management.

Over 10 PhD students within the project carry out research in an international arena. They do field work abroad, maintain contacts within international networks of scientists and present their work at international conferences and in international journals. Examples are the field measurements of Martijn Westhoff and Miriam Gerrits in Luxemburg and Arjen Tuijnder’s flume experiments in Braunschweig.

Project team members are active in many flood management projects all over the world. An example is the involvement in post-Katrina studies for New Orleans.
