AIO in Focus

Fifty AIOs (research assistants) are affiliated to Delft Cluster. ‘AIO in Focus’ is intended to help you find out more about the interesting work they carry out. This month is the turn of Claudia Basta, who will present her dissertation on 22 June in the Kronigzaal at the Faculty of Natural Science, Lorentzweg 1, Delft. The subject of Claudia’s doctorate is ‘Risk, territory and society: challenge for a joint European regulation’. [Click here] for more information.

Second Rode Hoed debate on 16 June on the growth of Almere

‘Growth of Almere inside and outside the dikes: a quality leap for the living environment?’
The second ‘Delta in Balance’ debate will take place on 16 June 2009 in ‘De Rode Hoed’ in Amsterdam. Following the success of the first debate, another interesting subject is on the programme: ‘Growth of Almere inside and outside the dikes: a quality leap for the living environment?’
The National Water Plan states that there is space to live outside the dikes, provided that this does not interfere with the discharge- and future water level plans for lakes. The effects of climate change, acting in accordance with the Bird Habitat Guidelines, government Spatial Development policy, but also the ambitions of the Noordvleugel (the area around Amsterdam) as laid out in the Randstad Urgent Policy must all be embedded in implementation of the plans. Almere has therefore developed a number of alternatives that are described in the policy document Almere 2030.

Decisions concerning these alternative plans are due to be made in 2009. The most imaginative alternative is that from Almere Waterstad, which combines an ecological leap in scale from the IJmeer/Markermeer with urban development inside and outside the dikes.

Veerman Committee recommendation: continue construction of North-South line

The Veerman Committee has advised that all construction work on the North-South metro-line in Amsterdam should be completed.  According to the committee, the total cost of the new metro-line will amount to a maximum of 3.1 billion euro.

The committee also advises that a project organisation should be established, with a general director who answers directly to the alderman. It was not always clear in the past whose responsibilities lay where. The experts also recommend that the approach used to carry out drilling under the centre of the city needs to be changed. In addition, a great deal must be done to win back the trust of the Amsterdam population.

The Bosatlas of Underground Holland

Noordhoff Publishers and Lijn43 are bringing the  “Bosatlas of Underground Holland” on to the market. COB is collaborating on the ‘Infrastructure’ chapter of this atlas.

Many hundreds of maps and graphics provide a picture of what the ground underneath our feet has to offer: from oil- and gas extraction to archaeological discoveries, from terrestrial heat extraction to CO2 storage, from railway tunnels to waste transport, from soil remediation to recycled soil. Unique: take a look beneath the surface of Amsterdam, with its family vaults, metro tunnels, district heating projects, pile foundations, and spectacular archaeological finds.

This one-off publication will appear as a limited edition, and will make an interesting business gift for any professional involved with the Dutch subsoil.

Muiderslot Wetlands considerations

Approximately 50 interested parties came together on 3 April to exchange ideas about what needs to be done to ensure that the current consensus does not become diluted, and that the Ijsselmeer process continues. Those present declared that a great deal had been achieved in recent years. The process has already made good progress. The government’s positive contribution to integrality by means of the RAAM letter was endorsed, as was the notion that ecological strengthening à la TMIJ should be the guiding principle in all developments. The continuation path presented by the Wetlands Association, consisting of covenant, steering committee, and social knowledge cluster, was introduced here. All of which must concur with the RAAM letter.

Gateway Underground Construction and Underground Use of Space

A great deal of knowledge has been built up over the last 10 years as a result of field research carried out during underground construction projects. In order to secure this knowledge properly and to make it available, the COB has developed a new website that is linked to a document databank storing all existing relevant know-how from the network. This ‘gateway’ will be presented to all participants at the Technology Symposium that will be held on 25 June. The first knowledge that will be presented via the website will originate from the Technology Symposium speakers themselves. This of course means that the website is not (yet) complete, but any parties wishing to make a contribution are welcome to do so. They can contact Wendy Hobma for more information.
