AIO in focus

Fifty AIOs (research assistants) are affiliated to Delft Cluster. ‘AIO in Focus’ is intended to help you find out more about the interesting work they carry out. This month is the turn of Toine Vergroesen. Toine intends to continue with his study after the Delft Cluster work has finished. He hopes to complete his research by the end of 2010. Vergroesen is working on a model that will be able to integrate all urban water flows, focusing on the quantities of water followed by water quality. It will be a flexible model set-up, allowing users to select relevant water flow, the scale of the model and the most suitable description depending on the question.[Click here] for more information.

Risk Management seminar: ‘Uncertainties are to be expected’

The complexity of municipal construction projects continues to increase. How do you deal with the inevitable uncertainties and high expectations of those involved? At the beginning of June, approximately 70 participants took part in the seminar “A grip on municipal projects’. TNO and Deltares presented the results of research into risk management that they have carried out over several years. The conclusion was that we should learn how to deal with risks instead of moving out of the way. During the seminar, Martin van Staveren (who has recently completed his doctor’s degree on this subject) gave a presentation about the research results. During the collaboration agreement, TNO and Deltares studied the obstructions and conditions for dealing effectively with risks and probabilities. In doing so, they focused on the implementation of risk management in municipal organisations and the motivation of different user groups. A variety of municipalities have taken part in the research over the years.

8 October ‘Scenic Tunnels’ symposium

The Landscape Tunnels’ symposium will take place on Thursday 8 October in the Hogeschool Rotterdam, location Kralingse Zoom. The subject will be: Investing in added value? An increasing challenge for the Dutch government is making the right balance in relation to the (re) arrangement of scarce green space in urban areas such as the Randstad. The Scenic Tunnels symposium will cover four important themes that play a role in these decision-making processes:
- How large is the (experience) value of the landscape?
- How should the value of the landscape and underground space be included in cost-benefit analyses?
- How are the best available processes and techniques included when balancing policy?
- What in fact are the state-of-the-art techniques used in the construction of scenic tunnels?
