Aio in the picture

Fifty AIOs (research assistants) are affiliated with Delft Cluster, all of whom have their own AIO page on the website www.delftcluster.nl . ‘AIO in Focus’ is intended to help you find out more about the interesting work they carry out. This month is the turn of Martin van Staveren. Martin’s research is the first of the five doctorate studies within the DC project ‘Implementation of Risk Management’ to be completed. On 17 April 2009, he presented his dissertation at the University of Twente on the implementation of risk management within organisations. His research has provided the answer as to how risk management  - that is routinely carried out - nonetheless does not progress smoothly in organisations. This is also true for many types of innovation. Numerous implementation paths fail, leading to wasted expenditure and frustration.

Literature studies and interviews with experts in The Netherlands, England, the United Sates and South Africa show there is a clear explanation as to why implementation proves so difficult: hundreds of factors play a role. Using state-of-the-art synthesis of risk management, innovation management, and change management it appeared possible to develop an entirely new approach. The numerous factors have been translated into a manageable and measurable set of variables. In doing so, attention is given to both hard technological aspects as well as softer organisational and human aspects.

The knowledge base that has been developed was tested in four organisations active in the soil, road, and hydraulic sector. It seems to offer an approach that is steady and flexible, and which can actually embed risk management and innovation in organisations. This is no unnecessary luxury in times of crisis. Verliefde wins first Waternet Water-cycle Innovation Prize

ir. Roelof Kruize, director of Waternet, presented the first Water-cycle Innovation Prize to the doctorate graduate ir. Arne Verliefde on Friday 16 January at TU Delft. Verliefde completed his doctoral study with the assistance of Delft Cluster. Verliefde was the first recipient of this price, for his dissertation 'Rejection of organic micropollutants by high pressure membranes (NF/RO)'. As the best of 12 candidates, Verliefde will be able to use his cash prize for study trips and further scientific research. The jury report states; “Verliefde’s papers are scientific pearls: with innovative concepts, mathematically well-supported, elaborately tested experimentally, analysed in a precise scientific manner, and presented in an excellent way.” Verliefde’s work is of major practical significance. The methodology that he has developed to model the removal of organic micropollutants can - with certain modifications - also be applied to other purifcation processes in the water-cycle. Read more about Verliefde’s research [here].

Consortium DC-COB at ParkeerVak

The Parkeervak will take place between 31 March and 2 April in the Baroniehal at the Branbanthallen in Den Bosch. ParkeerVak is the meeting place for those project developers, facility managers, municipalities and companies that want to keep abreast of the latest developments, technical innovations, and changing regulations in the field of parking. Underground parking is an important theme that will be presented at ParkeerVak 2009. The results of the DC-COB consortium will also be presented. Underground use of space and construction as an inspiration and solution will take centre stage at the Underground Parking Pavilion. A focused day programme with networking meetings and lectures will form the basis for this.

International course Horizontal Directional Drilling

Deltares Academy will host the course Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) between 31 March and 2 April.
During the 3-day course, participants will learn more about horizontal directional drilling, taking into account the possible dangers. The course will help participants select the correct equipment and materials from those that are currently available. [Click here] for more information.

New reports DC-COB consortium

Many Delft Cluster projects are currently in the completion phase. This is also the case for two DC-COB consortium projects: ‘Controlled Drilling in Urban Areas’ and ‘Innovations for Shallow Construction’. This has led to two new final reports. The report ‘Practical Study Groene Hart Drilled Tunnel’ focused on the girder action behind the tunnel drilling machine during construction of the Groene Hart Drilled Tunnel. The movement and deformation of the tunnel, the stresses in the tunnelling, and the grout pressure on the outer side of the tunnel tube were the spearheads in the study. The report ‘Process improvements for construction of underground infrastructure – Microtunnelling’ examines two monitoring projects: the IJ crossing in Amsterdam, and the A13 and Rhine-Schie canal crossing in Rijswijk.

Delft Cluster participates in master’s ‘Urban & Area Development’

Delft Cluster is one of the participants in the master’s study Urban and Area Development (MUAD). The aim of this course, which can be followed in Utrecht, Deventer and Rotterdam, is to provide area developers with a broad viewpoint. MUAD is open to those with a hbo and wo education who have a minimum of three years work experience, for example in a municipality, a corporation, with a project developer, or in an engineering consultancy. MUAD is a practically-oriented course where the objective is to ensure that area developers develop into genuine all-rounders.
