Lively second Rode Hoed debate on the future of Almere

The second ‘Delta in Balance’ debate took place in ‘De Rode Hoed’ in Amsterdam on 16 June. The subject was ‘Almere outside the dike: vision and daring, or mega insanity? The leap in scale in Almere from 185,000 to 350,000 inhabitants by 2030 makes it necessary to build outside the dike. As well as 5,000 houses, a link must also be created to Amsterdam via the IJmeer. Or not? Supporters and those holding an opposing view held a lively discussion on the subject.

Van Beuren in Thailand as teacher for workshop

Ellen van Beuren, leader of the work package ‘policies for sustainable development’ within the project ‘Implementation of risk management’ was invited to lead the ongoing workshop 'Sustainable development for Amphawa and Samut Songkhram, Thailand' in the capacity of guest teacher. The Kasetsart University in Bangkok organises this two-week workshop for Master students from different disciplines and continents. The students face the challenge of helping the local community in Samut Songkhram/Amphawa (located on the edge of Bangkok, near the coast) to find a solution for the lack of space and transport problems that are the result of advancing urbanisation, increasing recreational activities by the local population, and international tourism. Solutions must also contribute to increasing the area’s resilience, in order to cope with the consequences of climate change.

Technology Symposium 2009 dominated by ‘Deep construction in urban areas'

The fourth Technology Symposium took place on 25 June in Fort Voordorp in Groenekan. This year’s theme was ‘Deep construction in urban areas’. Construction, renovation – sometimes it seems as if no more excavation or demolition is possible in cities. Construction pits are a cause of irritation and inconvenience for some, whilst for others they represent work on improving the city.

Jaco Ter Wal (COB Board) opened the plenary programme, after which Cees Brandsen (HID MinIstry of Transport, Public Works & Water Management, Infrastructure Service) took responsibility for launching the knowledge portal

for underground construction and underground use of space (
www.cob.nl). Jack Amesz (Programme Director COB) closed the plenary opening by handing over the new Bosatlas of Underground Holland to Cees Brandsen. The underground atlas had been published one day earlier to bring the International Year of the Earth to a close.

During the parallel sessions, the focus was on technology, process- and risk management, and practical field cases. Martin van Staveren (Deltares) closed the programme with a reading on ‘Risk, Innovation and Change: a different approach for underground construction.’
