Policy design for a sustainable built environment

Reason of the research

The concept of sustainable development promotes a process that is beneficial to multiple values: to people, to the planet and to the economy. In the final decade of the 20th century, many policies to enhance sustainable development were developed. These policies were often developed in participatory processes, to the satisfaction of stakeholders. However, in 2005, some fifteen years after the introduction of sustainable development in policy making, it can be questioned whether these policies sufficiently contributed to the envisaged win-wins between multiple values. Especially environmental values seem to be underrepresented in policies and policy results.

Project plan

In her research, Ellen van Bueren has analyzed three policy processes in support of a sustainable built environment. She has analyzed the decision-making processes and how and to what extent policies guaranteed the representation of multiple values. Based on the analysis, she suggests how to improve policies and decision-making.

The end 2007 she’ll expect to finish her PhD.
